Differences Forum Reflection

For the last part of our EDPY class we conducted a forum in which we learned about different scenarios that may arise in our classroom. I was very interested in discussing the different topics which included gender, multiculturalism, poverty, LGBTQ, religion, immigration, etc. I was very interested to learn about different ways in which these topics are being handled in the public school system and the ways in which they have arisen.
I particularly felt, that the topics of gender and multiculturalism were very interesting and would have liked to spend some more time discussing them.
The information that was presented in this forum was very helpful, for it brought other perspectives on issues that we may encounter in our classroom that may be difficult to navigate through. It is topics that are present in everyday life and that most of the time we do not really consider or think about analytically. By bringing these topics up in class and discussing them in our learning community, I think that we became more aware of the different issues that are present and it made us think of ways in which to deal with them so that we can provide the healthiest learning environment possible for our students.
I think that the articles were very helpful as a jumping point for our discussions and I think it would have been beneficial for all students to read several articles instead of just the one we were presenting. I really enjoyed the way in which everyone in class was engaged and participating in the discussion. Furthermore, I really enjoyed how people were very constructive and respectful of each other when arguing a specific point. I believe that this forum was very helpful to provide us with a broader perspective of some of the issues that we will be facing in our classrooms as teachers.
